AI has stolen the click. Now what?

You’ve probably seen "zero-click marketing" thrown around and thought it’s just another shiny piece of corporate waffle. And to be fair, marketing isn't short of buzzwords destined for the graveyard.

But there's a reason why everyone is using it: this is one of the biggest shifts in online behaviour we've seen since the rise of social media.

AI search is changing how people make decisions online. This new kid in town had the balls to crown itself the gatekeeper of information, deciding which brands get seen and (more importantly) which get forgotten.

Why browse when AI can answer?

You've probably seen Google's Gemini ads promising answers at the touch of a button. But convenience comes at a cost.

Gone are the days of the ever-so-familiar formula: rank in Google, earn the click, convert the visitor. Because AI search has barged its way between brands and their audiences. Ask it a question and it'll confidently serve up an answer before you've had the chance to click a link.

Convenient? Absolutely. A problem for brands relying on website traffic? You bet.

2026 stats.

60%

of Google searches are now zero-click.

The click isn't dead (yet). It's just not a guarantee.

58%

lower average CTR for pages appearing alongside AI Overviews.

Turns out position #1 isn't the flex it used to be.

80%

of consumers rely on zero-click results for at least 40% of their searches.

The fastest answer almost always wins.
I hate to be the one to tell you, but these numbers are only going to rise. As AI gets smarter consumers will become even more comfortable getting answers without ever visiting a website. This isn't the peak, it's the starting line.

Trust is the new flex.

In a strange twist of fate, the internet has come full circle. Back in the late '90s, a beloved butler called Ask Jeeves encouraged people to search using natural (often unhinged) questions. Then Google arrived and trained us to communicate like cave people:
  • “best marketing agency Somerset”
  • “website traffic down no reason”
  • “why sales dropped website fine”
Now we're right back where we started. Only this time, the butler has been replaced by AI.
People are typing their entire stream of consciousness into ChatGPT, Google and Claude, expecting an answer before they've even finished the thought:
  • “We need a new website but we've got hundreds of products, multiple systems and everyone keeps warning me about migrations. Help.”
But the responses AI gives aren't just about finding information - they're about deciding which information deserves your attention. It builds answers from the content, reviews and sources it finds online, and judges which businesses are credible enough to recommend.

Unlike traditional SEO, it doesn't just read keywords, it interprets information. Which makes trust the new flex.

The 3 things you can do right now.

So what should you do now that we've spent the last few minutes telling you the rules have changed?

You could ignore all of this and hope AI eventually figures out your business for itself… but we wouldn't recommend it. Instead, focus on three things:

  1. Find out if AI can actually see you.

First, use our AI Visibility Checker to see whether AI can find and understand your website. Then ask AI the questions your customers would ask to understand how it's interpreting your content. You might be surprised by what it has to say.
  1. Create content that answers real questions.

Want AI to trust your content? Start by listening. The best content answers the questions your customers are already asking.

  1. Build trust signals everywhere.

AI looks at reviews, mentions, social media and case studies across the web — not just your website. And every signal helps shape how your brand is understood.

If this sounds like a lot, you're not alone. It's easy to get bogged down by all this change. The good news is that most brands are still figuring it out, which means the opportunity is up for grabs.
